The fourth round of the National Days of Immunization against Poliomyelitis was launched in Uzbekistan on 25 October.
Unlike in the first three rounds, which covered some 3 million children under the age of 5, the fourth round will cover over 10 million children and teenagers aged 0 to 15 years.
According to specialists, although poliomyelitis is most frequent among children below 5, the serious disease may also affect teenagers and adults who had not been vaccinated properly before.
The first three rounds of immunization were held in Uzbekistan with support from the UNICEF and USAID in May, June and July. The fourth round will last through 30 October.
Prior to the immunization week, required quantities of the vaccine were delivered to all regions of the country, and special medical groups and immunization stations were set up.
In Uzbekistan, no cases of poliomyelitis have been registered since 1996. The children under the age of 7 are vaccinated on a systematic basis.
