ACTIVE MEASURES TAKEN TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF ROADS IN UZBEKISTAN

The administration of President Islam Karimov pays close attention to the development of transportation and communication infrastructure of Uzbekistan. Large-scale projects on the construction of highways, improvement of the transport-related relations with foreign states, integration of new technology into the sphere, preparation and training of qualified staff are being run.

The Head of the Department at the UzAvtoYul State Joint-Stock Company for the construction and exploitation of automobile roads of Uzbekistan Zarifulla Hojanov said that over the years of independence the total length of the newly laid and reconstructed roads in the country has grown to over 3,200 kilometers, UzA reported.

Every year, on average 220 kilometers of roads are laid and reconstructed, 400-450 kilometers go through major repairs, and about 1,500 kilometers go through medium repairs. Repairs of the automobile roads raise their technical category to a higher level, which substantially raises the general quality of service provided to the transport flow.

On the initiative of the President, tunnels are built through the passes of Kamchik and Rezak on the Tashkent-Ferghana highway.

Previously, the traffic flow from the southern and northern regions of the country to Ferghana valley passed through the Tashkent's Drujba Narodov Avenue. The construction of the Big Circle Road in Tashkent eliminated the problems associated with the overload of traffic on the streets of Tashkent and made it possible to link the international motor highways of Almaty-Bishkek-Tashkent-Termez, Tashkent-Dushanbe, and Tashkent-Osh into a single network.

A big railroad and motor road bridge built over the river of Amudarya expanded the transport capacity for the residents of Karakalpakstan Republic and Khorezm region.

At this time, on the threshold of the celebration of the country's 17th independence anniversary, construction and assembly works on large road and construction objects – on the road segments connecting Gulistan and Ahangaran, Beshbulak, Togaytemir, Kurgantash and Hojaipok, including the investment programme of Uzbekistan for the year 2008, have been speeded up. Construction works are carried on on the road connecting Kumkurgan an Baysun districts of Surkhandarya region, the road that goes to Andijan region bypassing Kokand. Also, large bridges are being built on the Urgench-Beruni highway in Syrdarya region.

Road workers continue to work to raise the technical level of twenty international highways going through Uzbekistan and leading to the countries of Russia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and China.

Fast and high quality construction, reconstruction and repair of automobile roads largely depend on the quality of construction materials used in the works. The Resolution of the President of Uzbekistan of 20 December 2006 "On measures to develop public motor roads in 2007-2010" describes in detail the programme of actions to address this issue for the following several years.

The works being implemented in the country to develop and improve the condition of the motor roads, ensure the safety of the road traffic help strengthen the economic relations wit the foreign countries, and thereby improve the welfare of the Uzbek nation.
