In Tashkent President Sees Finance Minister of Bahrain

On June 5 this year at the Oksaroy Residence in Tashkent President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the Minister of Finance of the Kingdom of Bahrain Sheikh Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Halifa, according to the Uzbekistan National News Agency.

President has said that the visit of the finance minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain to Uzbekistan witnessed about the fact that the two sides maintained a keen interest to extend cooperation.

For Uzbekistan the relations with Arab states are one of the priority directions of its foreign policy. In this context, the cooperation with Bahrain is important since, on its part, it highly assesses the interaction with Uzbekistan, as well.

Uzbekistan, which enjoys a substantial economic potential, is a major guarantor of security and stability in the Central Asian region. The cooperation develops in the conditions of peace and stability, the report has also underscored.

The foreign ministries of the two states established the regular consultations. This allows both for Uzbekistan and Bahrain to support one another in the international arena.

As far the economic cooperation is concerned, then it should be noted that the two countries have not utilized all existing opportunities, yet. The processing of oil and gas, petrochemical sphere, banking and finance sector, agriculture and tourism stand out as prospective directions to further engagement.

According to the report, thanks to the high level of development of transport of communications many transnational corporations have established their offices in Bahrain. The branch offices of over eighty foreign banks are now operating in that country.

The incomes from their operations account for 20 percent of the nation’s GDP. At the same time, the development of cooperation with Bahrain will allow Uzbekistan to expand ties with large firms, companies and banks.

Uzbekistan and Bahrain enjoy profound opportunities in cooperating in humanitarian sphere, as well. The ties between scholars, people of culture and art, as well as athletes are serving to make the two nations closer, the report also said.

At the Oksaroy negotiations in Tashkent Sheikh Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Halifa has said with pleasure that as a part of his stay in Uzbekistan he had talks at a number of ministries and agencies, exchanged views on the issues of bilateral cooperation. He has also thanked the Uzbek Leader for a warm welcome.

NBU hosts symposium on anti-crisis measures

National Bank of Uzbekistan for Foreign Economic Activity (NBU) hosted a symposium "Studying anti-crisis measures in conditions of global financial-economic crisis", dedicated to international scientific conference on the book of the Uzbek President Islam Karimov "Global financial crisis, ways and measures on its overcoming in conditions of Uzbekistan".
Wu Xiolin, deputy head of Committee of assets and liabilities of the Chinese State Council and representative of China Development Bank participated at the event.

The symposium was aimed at studying of anti-crisis measures in condition of global financial-economic crisis, in example of Uzbekistan and China, as well as exchange of opinion and experience of its overcoming.

The Chinese side presented lectures on global financial crisis and its consequences, macroeconomic development of China and reaction to financial crisis, role of the China Development Bank to support internal development of China in period of financial crisis.

Participants noted positive results of cooperation between China and Uzbekistan and underlined good level of interaction between NBU and China Development Bank.

They also discussed results and outcomes of international conference on the book of the Uzbek President Islam Karimov "Global financial crisis, ways and measures on its overcoming in conditions of Uzbekistan".

UNDP awards journalists for promotion of women's rights in mass-media

On 5 June 2009, UNDP announced winners of the jopurnalistic contest "The role of mass media in women's rights promotion", which was organized jointly by UNDP and International Center for Training of Journalists. Eight representatives of Ubek mass-media, both national and regional, were awarded for their works in the field of women's rights, gender equality and combating discrimination against women.

The contest was aimed at eliminating stereotypes in mass media of Uzbekistan, improving skills of journalists through training on correct writing, taking photos and videos, thus helping journalists to acquire the best practices of global journalism.

Anita Nirody, UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan, Gulnara Marufova, Deputy Chairperson of the Women's Committee of Uzbekistan, and Anne Bauty, Ambassador of Switzerland in Uzbekistan, opened the ceremony.

Journalists, editorial boards and web media outlets participated in the contest. The contest winners, announced at the ceremony today, are the following:

1. Editorial Board of "Adolat Yo'li" newspaper ( Ferghana regional prosecutor's office)
2. Nadejda Lee - reporter of "Tashkentskaya Pravda" newspaper
3. Feruza Khashimkhanova – newspaper "Zerkalo XXI"
4. Salimakhon Rustamova – reporter of Ferghana regional television and radio company

The following contestants were also awarded as encouragement to keep up great work:

1. Zamira Baltaeva – reporter of "Samarkandskiy Vestnik" newspaper
2. Akhmadjon Buzrukov – Radio Uzbekistan
3. Valentina Pavlovskaya – editor-in-chief of "Chirchik" newspaper
4. Aliya Abdunabieva – correspondent of www.krasota.uz website

The contest organizers expressed hope that mass media representatives will support promotion of gender equality, targeted at promoting women's rights and ensuring equal opportunities for both men and women in participation in socio-political life of the country.
