POLICY
PRESIDENT OF SOUTH KOREA ARRIVES IN UZBEKISTAN
President of the Republic of Korea Lee Myung-Bak arrived in Tashkent on a state visit on 10 May on the invitation of the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, National News Agency UzA reported.
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov welcomed the high-ranking guest at the Tashkent airport.
The official welcoming ceremony of the President of Korea Lee Myung-Bak was held at the Durmen residence.
Accompanied by President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, Lee Myung-Bak passed the honorary guard. The state anthems of the two states were played.
Islam Karimov and Lee Myung-Bak then started their face-to-face talk. The presidents are expected to consider the issues of further expansion of the Uzbek-Korean relations, as well as problems of regional and international importance.
Signing of a number of documents aimed at deepening cooperation between the two countries is planned during the visit.
UZBEK-EGYPTIAN INTERGOVERNMENTAL COMMISSION HOLDS SITTING
On May 4-5 this year the Sixth meeting of the Uzbek-Egyptian intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation was held in the city of Cairo, the press-release by the Uzbek Foreign Ministry’s Press Service said.
The Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan Rustam Kasymov has led the Uzbek delegation and the Minister of International Cooperation of the Arab Republic of Egypt Fayza Aboul Naga - the Egyptian delegation.
During the talks the sides discussed the state and prospects of the Uzbek-Egyptian relations on trade, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The sides have also emphasized the need to further increase the bilateral trade and extend the investment cooperation between the two countries. The participants of the meeting paid an attention to extending the cooperation between the two countries in the sphere of agriculture and water resources, as well as tourism.
The negotiations have resulted in signing of five documents:
- Agreement on the friendship and cooperation between the city administration of the capital of Uzbekistan – city of Tashkent and the city administration of the capital of Egypt - city of Cairo.
- Memorandum of Understanding on the cooperation in the sphere of water resources between the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Economy of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources of Egypt.
- Memorandum of Understanding on the cooperation in the sphere of record-keeping (archives) between the Agency of “Uzarhiv” at the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan and the Head Department of National Library and Archives of Egypt.
- Memorandum of Understanding between the Alisher Navoi Samarkand State University and the Suez Canal University of Egypt.
- the Protocol of the Sixth meeting of intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The place and date of holding of the next meeting of the Uzbek-Egyptian intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation will be agreed through the diplomatic channels, according to the press-release.

UZBEK-SOUTH KOREAN BUSINESS FORUM HELD
The forum of business circles of Uzbekistan and South Korea started on 11 May in Tashkent in the framework of the state visit of the President of South Korea Lee Myung-Bak.
The event, organized by the Ministry of foreign economic relations, investments and trade of Uzbekistan and the Commerce and industry chamber of South Korea, is devoted to issues of expansion of economic and investment cooperation.
Heads of ministries and other state bodies, as well as companies and organizations are participating in the business forum.
UZBEKISTAN RECEIVES SECOND KOREAN AIR A-300-600 CARGO PLANE
The second A-300-600F cargo plane arrived to Navoi airport from Seoul in accordance with the leasing agreement signed between Uzbekistan Airways and Korean Air, UzA reported.
According to Uzbekistan Airways press service, the two Airbus liners will be used for cargo routes to Delhi, Bangkok, Moscow and then to other destinations in Europe and Asia.
The agreement foresees the creation of the multi-modal logistics hub at the Navoi International airport in the framework of the formation of the joint global network uniting cargo flows from Asia to Europe and back.
The regional logistics center will become part of the free industrial zone, which is currently being created in Navoi region.
NEW GARMENTS MARKET UNDER CONSTRUCTION ON UZBEK-AFGHAN BORDER
The construction of the new Termiz garments market, the project cost of which is about 7 billion soums (US$4.8 million), has started in the administrative centre of Surkhondaryo region in Uzbekistan, according to Uzreport Information Portal.
An official from the town administration said that the local administration would make its contribution to the project by allocating 6.5 hectares of land in a port area of the Amudarya river. Shareholders will invest the rest 49% of the necessary funds.
According to the project, there are plans to build 500 stores. The area of each store will be 36 square metres plus nine square metres for storage. In addition to this, there are plans to build six multi-storey supermarkets.
A catering unit, as well as units to sell ice-cream and soft drinks will be built there, which will create nearly 1,500 new jobs at the market complex not far from the Amudarya River (on Uzbek-Afghan border).

WORLD WATER FORUM DELEGATION HOLDS TALKS IN UZBEKISTAN
On May 7 this year the delegation led by the president of the World Water Forum Louis Fashon held talks at the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Economy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, according to the report by the “Narodnoye slovo” newspaper.
At the moment, the newspaper wrote, the water shortage has turned into an acute problem for many countries. Bettering the system of management of water resources and effective use allow to ensure the stable development of agriculture and provide for food safety, strengthen the human health, protect environment and preserve ecological balance.
At the Tashkent talks the sides are reported to have exchanged views on the current state and prospects of the mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and World Water Forum in the sphere of agriculture and water economy, as much as introducing technologies that would provide for effective use of water resources and water saving, enhancing the exchange of experience on the international level and deepening the relations.
MAY 9 EVENT BRINGS TOGETHER VETERANS, ELDERLY AND YOUTH
The solemn meeting dedicated to the May 9 – the Remembrance and Honors Day – took place in the city of Tashkent, Jahon Information Agency reported.
The event has been organized in cooperation of the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Kamolot Public Youth Movement and Nuroniy Foundation, according to the report.
The lawmakers at the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, veterans of war and labor, activists of makhallas (local neighborhood community areas) and women’s committees, as well as teachers and students participated at the event.
Those who spoke at it have said that under the sober leadership in the country a special attention is being paid towards showing respect to and honoring the veterans of war and labor, as much as elder generation, and bettering the social security system. The elderly takes an active part in raising the spirituality of the people, reviving and safeguarding the national traditions and values, upbringing and harmonic development of youth.
“We are glad that in Uzbekistan the elderly are shown respect and being honored,” Ghafur Shamsiev, the veteran of labor, has said, “they receive material and moral support, as well as social and medical aid.”
The event has been accompanied with a wonderful concert show of masters of arts and young performers, according to the report.
STUDENTS, PUNDITS DISCUSS DEVELOPING JOURNALISM IN UZBEKISTAN
Earlier this week the student scientific conference dedicated to the issues of developing journalism in Uzbekistan took place at the Uzbekistan State World Languages University in Tashkent, according to the “Narodnoye slovo” national newspaper.
The speakers took a floor at the conference on various related topics of linguistics and journalism. In particular, the topics included: “The language of advertisement on the television”, “Tender research in journalism” and “Speech strategies and tactics”, and others, the newspaper wrote.
The delegates to the conference addressed the problems of development of press, radio, television and interactive journalism. The experienced practicing journalists shared their knowledge with students.
Such scientific conferences are held at the university annually. The professors and teachers are accustoming the students to the research work and allow them to try themselves in science since the higher educational institutions not only train the qualified specialists, but also the future scholars of Uzbekistan, according to the report by the newspaper.
TASHKENT PREPARING FOR 2,200TH ANNIVERSARY
In accordance with the resolution of the President preparation to the 2200th anniversary of Tashkent is underway in the capital.
Large-scale work on building new objects, development of social infrastructure, restoration of historical and architectural monuments and other sights is continuing, UzA reported.
According to the city administration, 280,000 seedlings of Japanese safory, chestnuts, conifers, ornamental and fruit trees have been planted in Tashkent in the recent months.
Besides, 167,000 bushes were planted, about 65,000 trees cut, 100 kms of canals cleaned, 100 square meters of roads repaired.
More than 3,800 new workplaces were created in the city improvement sector since the beginning of the year, including gardeners, road repairers, drivers and others.
