PRESIDENT ATTENDS ANNIVERSARIES OF KARSHI, AMIR TEMUR
Uzbek President Islam Karimov attended ceremonies dedicated to the 2,700th anniversary of Karshi city and 670th anniversary of Amir Temur on 27 October.
The large volume of reconstruction works were carried out in local madrasahs and mosques.
President Karimov visited Kukgumbaz mosque, which was build in the 16th century and it is one of the forty objects, reconstructed within anniversary. Uzbek leader recommended to construct garden near mosque and plant decorative plants and trees.
Islam Karimov also acquainted with Odina memorable complex, which was used as a jail during Soviet times. Uzbek head noted that the complex was reconstructed qualitatively.
Uzbek president visited Central Dehkan Market and had a talk with local businesses and consumers. He familiarized with children park and activity of modern furniture shop.
President Islam Karimov participated in the opening of monument El Yurt Tayanchi (Motherland's Support).
Speaking at the ceremony, Uzbek leader said it is significant and unforgettable event in history of Kashkadarya region and Uzbekistan. He said ancient Nasaf, current Karshi city, marks its 2,700th anniversary.
He said the monument, which locates in centre of Karshi city, displays Uzbek family, foundation of Uzbek nation. He added that "we bow our heads before ancient history of Kashkadarya region, memory of great thinker and saints, who lived in this land and show our respect to those, who is working hard now."
Celebrations took place at the amphitheatre of Central Park named after Alisher Navoi. President Karimov delivered a speech and noted that ancient and modern look of Karshi attracts attention of many people and this demonstrates constructive work of Uzbek people.
Michael Barry Lane, permanent representative of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Uzbekistan, welcomed participants of celebrations on the behalf of the Director-General of the UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura. He highly values role of Nasaf in world civilization.
GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER TO VISIT CENTRAL ASIAN NATIONS
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will visit five Central Asian countries from 30 October to 4 November, German Foreign Ministry's spokesman Martin Jaeger told the press in Berlin on Friday.
Steinmeier will travel to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, where talks will focus on the state of human rights and rule of law in those states as well as promoting cultural dialogue, said Jaeger who pointed to the "growing significance" of the Central Asian region for the European Union.
The German foreign minister, who will be accompanied by an economic delegation, will also meet with representatives of civil societies in those five Central Asian states.
GERMAN ARMED FORCES PRESENT MEDICAL EQUIPMENT TO TERMEZ TB PROPHYLACTIC CENTRE
A conveyance ceremony of sanitary and medical equipment to Surkhandarya Region's TB (tuberculosis) prophylactic centre was held in Termez on 22 October, Jahon news agency reported.
The Defence Ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany delivered over 16,000 euro-worth set of stationary X-ray equipment to the dispensary as a token of Bundeswehr's (German Federal Armed Forces') gratitude for the possibility of using the city's infrastructure and Termez airport for the logistic support of peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.
TASHKENT CITY GOVERNOR TO VISIT RIGA
The governor of Tashkent city Abdukahhar Tuhtaev will pay a visit to the capital of Latvia in the early November.
In the course of the visit, Uzbek official will attend the opening ceremony of a new monument – the monument of the scientist and philosopher Abu Ali Ibn Sina, famous around the world as Avicenna.
Three-meter tall monument in granite and bronze, Tashkent's present to Latvia, will be placed in Riga in the square located on the territory of the Gailezers Hospital Complex. The author of the monument is a young talented sculptor Ravshan Mirtajiev.
"The very idea of the present was born two years ago, during the talk between the Director of the Museum of Medicine and the Rector of the Medical Academy. The government of Uzbekistan supported the idea, and the Riga Duma determined its future location," Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Latvia Kobiljon Nazarov said.
On 25 October the Finance and Administrative Affairs Committee of the Riga Duma approved the appropriation of 2,009 lats for the placement of the monument in the capital of Latvia.
Avicenna (980-1037) is a famous scientists, encyclopaedist, physician, and philosopher of the Muslim world. He was born in Afshana near Bukhara (Uzbekistan). He was the author of 450 books on a wide range of subjects. Many of these concentrated on philosophy and medicine. He was one of the Islamic world's leading writers in the field of medicine and followed the approach of Hippocrates and Galen. George Sarton called Ibn Sina "the most famous scientist of Islam and one of the most famous of all races, places, and times." His most famous works are The Book of Healing and The Canon of Medicine, also known as the Qanun (full title: al-qanun fil-tibb).
The monument of Avicenna is not the first gift of Uzbekistan to Latvia. In 2004 the monument of the famous astronomer of the Middle Ages Mirzo Ulugbek was erected in the Kronvalda Park in Riga.
KOREAN ENVOY NOTES CLOSE RELATIONS WITH UZBEKISTAN
Uzbekistan is the closest and the friendliest state among all Central Asian states, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenepatentuary of South Korea to Uzbekistan Mun Hayong said in interview to Uzbekistan.
Over this period, the heads of the two states visited each others' countries, and efforts were activated on the development of governmental cooperation channels, which allowed expanding bilateral relations in the international arena and achieve agreement concerning the situation in the region, Korean envoy said.
He said particular attention should be paid to the visit of the President of the Republic of Korea Roh Moo-hyun to Uzbekistan in May of the past year and the visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Mr. Islam Karimov in March of this year. Also, attention should be given to the visit of the Prime Minister of Korea Ms. Han Myung-sook.
These meetings stimulated further development and strengthening of bilateral relations at the new, higher quality level, Ambassador said.
"In March of this year our states reached an agreement on the organisation of joint research and exploitation of five oil and gas fields in Uzbekistan. Now, the countries are negotiating on the cooperation in the development of mineral fields of your country, particularly, gold and uranium fields. Close cooperation exists in the sphere of investments. The aggregate scale of investments made in the economy of Uzbekistan by the companies of South Korea exceeds US$ 1 billion, and today our country holds the first position by the volume of financial investments made in progressive reforms," Mun Hayong said.
The plans on the expansion of cooperation, with particular focus on the spheres of mechanical engineering, car production, and production of spare parts for automobiles, textile and weaving industries, are in the process of development, he added.
As a result of the financial crisis of 1998, the trade between our countries has dropped. However, in the recent few years it has picked up. Thus, during the past five years, it averaged over US$400 million yearly, Korean diplomat said.
In the future too, both countries will continue to put their best efforts in further development of practical cooperation in all spheres, he said.
"Our countries have the complementary economic elements, and with the joint input of these elements, cooperation between our states will become mutually beneficial, and will serve the good of both states," Korean envoy said.

UZBEK PRESIDENT VISITS AGRICULTURE MINI-TECHNOLOGIES EXHIBITION
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov visited International Specialized Exhibition-sale of mini-technologies and compact equipment for agriculture - Uzbekistan Agrominitech Expo-2006, which is taking place at UzExpoCentre in Tashkent.
The exhibition is organized in accordance with resolution of the president of Uzbekistan dated 24 August 2006 and it presents technologies for agriculture product manufacturers. The first exhibition presents products of over 180 companies from 24 countries, including Germany, Israel, Italy, China, Poland, Russia, France and others.
Uzbek President Islam Karimov acquainted himself with mini-technologies presented at the exhibition and met farmers, who is participating in the seminar organized within the framework of the exhibition.
President Karimov said the main aim of reforms in agriculture and development of farmers' movement is to improve well-being of nation. He said that farmers should take into account that each spent soum should bring income ten times higher.
Uzbek leader said it is necessary to establish long-term cooperation with foreign machinery producers, not only to buy their products.
President Karimov said Uzbekistan should think about production of similar technologies in Uzbekistan and organize system on rendering service.
UZBEKISTAN PLANS TO UTILIZE US$1.018BN IN 2007
Uzbekistan plans to utilize foreign investments for US$1.018 billion on 78 investment projects in 2007, an investment programme for 2007 said.
Uzbek President Islam Karimov signed a resolution on 9 October to improve investment programme for 2007.
The document said the investments for US$325.6 million on 36 projects will be attracted under state guarantees and the volume of foreign direct investment will make up US$692.7 million on 41 projects.
The largest volume of foreign investments or US$424.4 million will be utilized in fuel-energy sector, of which US$418.7 million will be invested into seven oil and gas sector due to direct investments of foreign company.
In particular, Russia's Lukoil will continue implementation of the project for US$995.2 million on development of gas deposits at Kamdym group in Bukhara rehion and exploration work in Ustyurt (US$170 million in 2007).
Gazprom, Russian gas giant, will invest US$99.2 million to exploration works in Ustyurt region. Overall, Russian firm plans to invest US$260 million in 2006-2008.
Zeromax GmbH of Switzerland will continue development of oil and gas deposits at Gissar region in southern-western Uzbekistan with total cost of US$400.5 million. The volume of investment of the company in 2007 planned at the volume of US$58 million.
Petronas of Malaysia will invest US$20 million to project on exploration of gas in Baysun investment block in Surkhandarya region. Total cost of the project is US$47.8 million.
Chinese CNODC intends to start exploration work five oil and gas blocks for US$208.5 million till 2010. The investor plans to direct US$26 million to the project in 2007.
Consortium of investors, including Uzbekneftegaz (Uzbek oil and gas) of Uzbekistan, Lukoil Overseas of Russia, Petronas of Malaysia, KNOC of Korea and CNPC of China will begin to exploration of Uzbek part of Aral Sea on the base of Product Share Agreement with the cost of US$99.8 million. The volume of investment to the project in 2007 will make up US$33 million.
KOGAZ of South Korea will begin complex exploration of Surgil deposit in Usyurt. Total volume of investment to the project is US$960 million. The volume of investment in 2007 will be US$12.5 million.
The volume of investment to Uzbek textile industry in 2007 will be US$93.2 million on 19 projects, including US$73.4 million on ten projects of Uzbekyengilsanoat (Uzbek Light Industry) state joint stock company.
It is expected that the volume of investments to communication sector will be US$107.1 million on three projects in 2007, of which US$101.9 million will be investments of mobile operators. In particular, MTS-Uzbekistan will invest US$86.9 million, Coscom will invest US$15 million.
Uzbekistan expects utilize investments for US$97.1 million in transport sector in 2007. The construction of Tashguzar-Boysun-Kumkurgan railway will be continued due to funds of JBIC (US$66.5 million). The country will continue project on electrification of Tashkent-Angren railway due to credit of German KfW for US$25.3 million.
Foreign investments for US$96.3 million soums will be directed to social sphere. In particular, the country plans to equip social objects (schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centres) due to funds of international financial institutions.
Investments for US$28.74 million will be used to realize irrigation and agriculture projects. In particular, the reconstruction of pump station of Amu Zang channel with total foreign investment volume of US$ 73.2 million (US$12 million in 2007) and installation of power generating equipment at two small hydroelectric power station with total cost of US$15.9 million (US$3.7m in 2007).
AGRICULTURE MINI TECHNOLOGIES EXHIBITION TAKES PLACE IN TASHKENT
First international specialized exhibition-sale of mini-technologies and compact equipment for agriculture - Uzbekistan Agrominitech Expo-2006 – opened in Tashkent on Saturday, 21 October.
The exhibition is organized at the initiative of the Uzbek President Islam Karimov. Ministry for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan and Uzbekistan Farmers' Association acted as organizers of the exhibition.
Shavkat Mirziyayev, Uzbek Prime Minister, opening the exhibition, said Uzbekistan is improving production system in agriculture based on development of farmers. He said this allows significantly improve efficiency of agriculture production.
Mr Mirziyayev said favourable climate in Uzbekistan allows to produce ecological clean, tasty fruits and vegetables. He said that over 7 million tonnes of fruit and vegetable products were produced in Uzbekistan this year, which allows the country to meet domestic demand and expand export.
Uzbek official said that in near future the country will double exports of fruits and vegetables and it needs to introduce new technologies.
The first exhibition presents products of over 180 companies from 24 countries, including Germany, Israel, Italy, China, Poland, Russia, France and others.
UzExpoCentre, which is hosting the exhibition, presented its pavilions for free-of-charge to exhibition participants. It should be noted that samples of technologies, imported to Uzbekistan to demonstrate in the exhibition, were also exempted from customs payments to attract more participants.
In case, the farmers decide to purchase equipment, they will not pay customs payments and value added tax.
The exhibition, which will end on 10 November, will allow farmers and agriculture firms, to acquaint with new technologies and equipment to process agriculture products.
TASHKENT INTERNATIONAL TOURISM FAIR WAS HELD IN TASHKENT
The Twelfth Tashkent International Tourism Fair (TITF) "Tourism along the Silk Road" was held in Tashkent from 26 to 28 October.
Zahidjon Hakimov, chairman of Uzbektourism, speaking at the press conference said the annual international tourism fair in Tashkent is the largest (event) in Central Asia and included to leasing events of World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). He said that the event is held for the twelfth time in Uzbek capital and presents potential of tourism market of Uzbekistan, which dynamically developed tourism infrastructure and built private businesses. He said that the fair became important tool in promotion of resources in internal and external tourism markets.
Head of Uzbek national tourism administration said over 100 companies are participating this year in the fair, of which 21 companies are foreign. He said that last year some 77 companies, including seven foreign firms, attended the fair.
He said that representatives of Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, Malaysia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Egypt and Russia will participate in the fair for the first time. Representatives of Ukraine, India, Azerbaijan, Turkey, UAE, Poland, Cyprus and other states will attend the event, he added.
Mr Hakimov said over 450 companies and firms operate in Uzbekistan and the share of private sector in structure of external tourism makes up over 90%. Over 500 craft enterprises involved in tourism market. Uzbekistan has over 240 various hotels, tourist centres and campings, which can accept over 19,000 tourists.
In the work of tourism fair and Forum of mayors will participate representative of UNWTO Dr Harsh Varma will attend the tourism fair and forum. It is necessary to note that World Tourist Organization together with tourism administrations of member countries of the UNWTO, since 1993 it has been implementing a unique international project "Tourism along the Silk Road". Historical "Samarkand Declaration on tourism along the Silk Road" was adopted in 1994 within the framework of this project and during the UNWTO session. Since 1995 Tashkent has been hosting an annual international tourism fair, and since 2004 the UNWTO office has been functioning in Samarkand to implement this project.
Saidahmat Raubaev, chairman of the Association of Private Tourism Organizations (APTO), that over 20 members of the association will attend the fair. He said that the association will organize round-table to discuss improvement of competitiveness of Uzbek tourism product, problems of tourism relations with other Central Asian states.
Mr Raubaev said tourism organizations from Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan confirmed their participation in this event.
He added that various contests will be held within the framework of the fair. He said that the association plans to hold contest among media representatives on the best coverage of tourism problems in Uzbekistan and the best project will be financed by private tourism representatives.
APTO head said this tourism forum will allow analyze and study trends in development of internal tourism market, determine demand for Uzbek tourism product in foreign markets and improve efficiency of participation of companies in tourism events, held in Uzbekistan.
Frangiz Abdullaeva, organizer of the exhibition and director-general of Great Silk Road advertisement agency, said various press conferences and presentations will be held within fair. In particular, Malaysian Tourism Minister will meet journalists and share his views n development of tourism among countries along Great Silk Road, Baltic Beach Hotel and AirBaltic will present resorts in Baltic region.
Participants and guests of the fair will visit Samarkand, central Uzbekistan, and they will have opportunity to acquaint with sights of this ancient city, which is called "heart of Great Silk Road". The organizers also are planning to hold different concerts and entertainment programmers.
UZBEKISTAN PLANS TO BUILD THREE NEW CEMENT PLANTS
UzStroyMateriali (Uzbek Construction Materials) association plans to build three large enterprises on production of Portland cement.
Pravda Vostoka reported that the plants will be located at Karakalpakstan, Surkgandarya region and Jizzakh region.
Total capacity of these plants will be 2.5 million tonnes of Portland cement per year. According to preliminary estimates, the cost of these three plants equals to US$w50 million.
UZBEKISTAN TO PRODUCE JAPANESE BUSES - REPORT
Uzbekavtosanoat (Uzbek Car Industry) joint stock company signed a memorandum on supply of spare parts to assembly of micro buses at Samarkand-based SamKocAuto.
The report, published in Pravda Vostoka newspaper, said the Uzbek plant will be able to produce over 500 Isuzu micro buses in near future. It added that the financial conditions of the enterprises will be improved.
KOC Holding of Turkey and UzAvtoProm, state-run company, launched SamKOC Auto with the cost of US$64 million in 1999. The venture should produce 4,000 buses and lorries annually, but failed to market its products. The venture produced only 60 buses and lorries annually.
SamKOC Auto is the second Uzbek automobile project. In 1996, Uzbekistan launched UzDaewoo Auto in Asaka, Andijan region. Last year, UzAvtoProm acquired 50% stake of Daewoo Motor and now the company fully controlled by UzAvtoProm.
UZBEKISTAN TO SELL 49% OF FLAGSHIP CARRIER IN 2008-REPORT
Uzbekistan plans to sell 49% of state-owned Uzbekistan Airways to foreign investors in 2008.
The remaining 51% of the company will remain under state control, the news service said. No other details of the plans were released.
"Uzbekistan Airways is a strategic enterprise and its sale will only be on a competitive basis," the report said.
The company has a fleet of 16 Western-made planes, comprising 10 Boeings, three A-310s, and three RJ-85s.
The company's planes fly to 21 destinations in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and the former Soviet Union.

FORUM OF PUBLIC ORGANIZATIONS WAS HELD IN TASHKENT
Forum of public organizations of Uzbekistan entitled "NGOs in establishment and development of social dialogue" was held in Tashkent on 27 October 2006.
The event dedicated to official opening of new public organization Fund on Support of Social Initiative, which was founded by Ecosan, National Association of NGOs of Uzbekistan, Fund Forum of Culture and Art of Uzbekistan, Mehr Nuri charity fund and other public organizations.
National and regional NGOs, international organizations, diplomatic corpus, official and business circles will participate in the forum.
Fund on Support of Social Initiative (FSSI) will be officially presented at the forum. The aim of the new fund is to consolidate efforts of public society of Uzbekistan to improve life of social-vulnerable layers of population. The forum will develop strategy on activity of public organizations for coordination of social projects and programmes.
The idea on creation of FSSI was vowed at the forum on charity and social initiatives, which took place in March 2006. Over 100 delegates from all regions of Uzbekistan attended the meeting and adopted decision on creation of the FSSI and agreed to cooperate further in this direction.
The main tasks of FSSI are assessment needs and demands of low-income citizens of Uzbekistan, development and realization of national social programmes, search for finance and other material resources to enforce social prorgrammes and projects and others.
The main directions of the fund are healthcare, education, social support, social infrastructure and ecology.
The upcoming forum will be important event in uniting efforts and creation of real mechanism for regular exchange of experience, mutual support and deepening of cooperation of Uzbek NGOs.
SAMARKAND HOSTS COURSE ON INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW
The Second Central Asian course on international humanitarian law under auspices of International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) and at the assistance by the Foreign Ministry and Public Education Ministry of Uzbekistan kicked off in Samarkand.
Young teachers and students in the region, who have gone through selection preliminary tests and are intending to use the acquired knowledge in their professional careers, will attend the nine-day course.
Over 30 youth received right to attend this course, which are taught by leading world-known experts on legal science. Lecturers from Russia, Germany, Belgium, France and other states will share their knowledge.
It is believed that the staff at the national societies of Central Asia Red Crescent will gain useful information, while engaging in practical tasks in classes, analyzing and taking part at the discussions, dedicated to the use of the norms of humanitarian law, which serves as protection of life around the globe.
Ayjamal Janbaeva, lawyer and graduate of Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, said the course is great opportunity to listen lectures of world-known specialists on humanitarian law.
Bekzod Artikov, coordinator of Regional Centre on Knowledge Propogation on International Humanitarian Law in Ferghana Valley, said the course allows him to improve knowledge on latest developments and achievements in this area.
UZBEK CAPITAL HOSTED MEETING OF SILK ROAD CITIES' MAYORS
The first regional forum of the Great Silk Road countries' cities mayors was held within Tashkent International Tourism Fair (TITF), which took place on 26-28 October.
The mayors of cities of Uzbekistan, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, representatives of various international organization discussed various aspects of expansion of cooperation to develop tourism in Great Silk Road route. They will also exchange opinions on attraction of investments to the region and collaboration.
Cities mayors of a number of countries, located on this ancient commercial arterial highway, during the two-day forum discussed regional interaction and commercial and economic cooperation on the basis of the revival of the historic importance of the Great Silk Road.
JAPAN ISSUES US$343,955 GRANTS TO UZBEK SCHOOLS, HOSPITAL
Japan government allocated grants for US$343,955 to four Uzbek schools and a children hopital, press release of the Japanese embassy in Uzbekistan said.
The release said the grants allocated to grass-root social projects within no-string aid programme of Japan. The funds will be used to improve education conditions and medical services, strengthening social status of women, as well as life standards of society.
The embassy said Secondary School No 41 of Syrdarya region (US$67,320), Secondary School No 18 of Uzun district of Surkhandarya region (US$54,864), Secondary School No 2 of Baysun district of Surkhandara region (US$69,389) and Secondary School No 14 of Termez of Surkhandarya region received grants.
Japan government also earmarked US$89,380 of grant to Tashkent city children hospital.
The embassy's release said the signing ceremony of grant-contracts will take place on 31 October.
FIRST EXHIBITION OF "APPLIED AND FINE ART OF UZBEKISTAN" OPENED
During the years of independence, in direct sense Tashkent became the model of creation. It was decorated with new construction, wide roads, bridges, gardens and parks. This list also comprises the new Palace of Culture and Art, erected on the eve of the 15th anniversary of the independence of the country in the Alisher Navoiy National Park, UzA reported.
Constructed according to the project of ToshkentboshplanLITI Institute, in accordance with a resolution by the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan of 14 September, 2006 the building was called "The Exhibition of Culture and Art". The terrace performed in the national style, surrounding the building from four sides includes thirty wooden carved columns. The palace was erected by workers of capital construction trust No 159; decoration works were executed by the best masters of Usto association.
The first exhibition entitled "Applied and fine art of Uzbekistan" was opened in the majestic and at the same time comfortable Palace of Culture and Art.
According to the director of the exhibition, Yulduz Yormuhameda, it demonstrates about four hundred exhibits. Among them - ancient coinage and engraving, ceramic articles of Samarkand masters, Khiva carpets, Fergana atlas and adras that plays with all colours of rainbow, famous Bukhara gold-embroidered dressing gowns, new picturesque canvases of our artists.
The majority of visitors are young people. The exhibition of culture and art will serve a specific goal, namely - a wide demonstration of our rich historical heritage, the unique models of ancient and contemporary national culture and art that had passed the tests by time and become the worthy contribution to development of world civilization. Thus, the exhibition aims to popularize the best people's traditions, which, undoubtedly, will contribute to training young people in the spirit of love for the native land, to respect national values.
Numerous interesting museums are located in all corners of our republic. All of us, including foreign tourists do not have an opportunity to visit these museums. The new Palace of Culture and Art, constructed on the initiative of the head of state, will organize exhibitions, which will demonstrate exhibits from all museums of the country.
Furthermore, the palace will organized creative meetings with well-known representatives of culture and art, young artists, sculptors, craftsmen and musicians. Likewise, the palace will arrange concerts, whose programmes will include the works of national and world classical art.
