A number of projects start in rural areas

Asian Development Bank is providing $300 million of loans for programs on improving drinking water supply in rural areas of Uzbekistan.

As the press office of ADB informed, the total project cost of the program that will run through 2018, is $375 million, including the contribution of the Government of Uzbekistan in the amount of $75 million.

At present, ADB has approved the first $60 million tranche of the loan for the modernization project of Damhoji interregional water passage worth $75 million. The project will improve drinking water supply for the rural population in 11 districts of Bukhoro and Navoi regions, as well as the city of Termiz, Surkhondaryo region.

Uzbekistan is implementing a state program for the central water supply in rural areas. The program, which is supported by international financial institutions, is aimed up to 2012 to provide rural communities with drinking water through construction of water systems.

In 2001, ADB provided $36 million of loans to Uzbekistan toward a project on improving water supply in three regional centers of the republic: Jizzakh, Guliston and Qarshi cities worth $65.5 million; and in 2005 the bank provided $25 million for project on improving drinking water in Navoi and Qashqadaryo regions worth $36 million.

Since 1995, ADB has provided credit facilities to Uzbekistan totaling $1.2 billion for 27 projects in education, agriculture, modernization of transport infrastructure and energy sectors.
